With much of the talk about the St. Louis Rams of late pertaining to their ability to land a big name head coach, a look to the upcoming NFL Draft provides a much needed chance to talk about on-field subject matter. Selecting second in the upcoming draft in no way assures the Rams of adding a game-changing piece to their current talent pool, but it will most likely be a step in the right direction.
In the 2011 draft process, nearly every team was aware of the fact that the Rams desperately needed to add a playmaker on the outside on offense. Unfortunately after the Cincinnati Bengals took A.J. Green fourth overall, the fact that the majority of teams were aware of St. Louis’ plans to stand pat and take Julio Jones with their allotted pick of 14. That provided the Atlanta Falcons with the necessary motivation to jump ahead of the Rams to select the Alabama Crimson Tide product sixth overall and force the Rams to go defensive.
This time around, it seems the Rams will have their pick of the available offensive weapons with the second pick. With many first round talents already in the fold along the offensive line for the team, the logical choice seems to be Justin Blackmon out of Oklahoma State who has declared himself eligible for the upcoming selection festivities.
Even though the Rams were able to add Brandon Lloyd from the Denver Broncos early in 2011, the lack of other viable threats significantly limited Sam Bradford’s number of targets. Adding Blackmon into the mix would again give the Rams a receiving corps worth mentioning and perhaps (in due time) propel their offense back toward the ‘greatest show on turf’ label that they earned in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
There will be plenty of debate ongoing with the draft still a few months away, but the early mock drafts are pointing toward an field-stretching receiver with the second overall selection.
