Blues Jays, Colby Rasmus reach agreement, avoid arbitration - SportingNews.com

The Toronto Blue Jays and center fielder Colby Rasmus have reached agreement on a $2.7 million contract and avoided arbitration, CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reported Sunday.

Rasmus, 25, was acquired by the Blue Jays in a midseason trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. After hitting .246 with 11 homers in 94 games with St. Louis in 2011, Rasmus hit .173 with three homers in 35 games for Toronto.

"I hope last year was a great teaching tool for him, and I wouldn't write it off," Blue Jays manager John Farrell told MLB.com. "I think there's a reason those things happen. Hopefully, he is better for it as a player and as a more consistent performer. The challenge is not going to change; the big leagues are still the big leagues, regardless of whether it's St. Louis, Toronto or anywhere else.

"He's going to get challenged like everyone in uniform will be, and I think coming into spring training and feeling like he's a member of the Blue Jays rather than someone in transition last year will go a long way."

Rasmus has been in the majors for three seasons and has 53 home runs, 171 RBIs and a .251 average.

Rasmus’ clashes with Cardinals manager Tony La Russa led to the trade that brought three key pitchers to the Cardinals’ World Series-winning team. The Cardinals sent Rasmus and three other players to the Blue Jays for pitchers Octavio Dotel, Edwin Jackson and Marc Rzepczynski and outfielder Corey Patterson.
