The St. Louis Cardinals  confirmed today that the team has hired Dan Kantrovitz as director of scouting. The team also said Matt Slater was promoted to director of player personnel.

Kantrovitz takes over the duties previously held by Jeff Luhnow, who was the Cardinals vice president of scouting and player development until the Houston Astros  hired him at baseball's winter meetings as their new general manager.

Kantrovitz had been drafted by the Cardinals out of Brown University, where he was a shortstop, in 2001, and an injury shortened his playing career. He later served as director of college scouting in the Cardinals front office from 2004 to 2008. In 2009, he joined the Oakland Athletics  , where he most recently was coordinator of international operations/baseball operations analyst. The 33-year-old St. Louis native holds a master's in statistics from Harvard.

Slater, who joined the Cardinals in 2007, had been special assistant to Senior Vice President and General Manager John Mozeliak. In his 21 years in professional baseball, Slater previously has worked in scouting and player development for the Los Angeles Dodgers  , Baltimore Orioles  and Milwaukee Brewers.

The Cardinals also said today that the team promoted Tony Ferreira, who joined the club's baseball operations last April, to baseball operations assistant/player development, and Jared Odom, who previously held media relations and sales posts with the team, to baseball operations assistant/scouting. ...
