In the News: Cardinals Caravan set for Sunday - Memphis Commercial Appeal

The Cardinals Caravan will stop at AutoZone Park on Sunday, featuring former Redbirds Lance Lynn and Tyler Greene, who were on the roster of the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Joining them will be Redbirds shortstop Pete Kozma and Cardinal minor leaguers Zack Cox and Ryan Jackson. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with the event beginning at 6:30. It is free to the public and will include free food and drinks.

BASEBALL

Owners voted 29-1 to give Bud Selig a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season. Selig has held the position since 1992, first as interim commissioner and then as commissioner since 1998. He will turn 80 in July 2014. ... Power-hitting free agent first baseman-outfielder Luke Scott was added to the middle of the Tampa Bay Rays lineup after agreeing to a $6 million, one-year contract. He will receive $5 million this season, and the deal includes a $6 million club option for 2013 with a $1 million buyout. ... Sixteen months after shoulder surgery, Johan Santana hopes to be back on the mound for the New York Mets when the season starts. He just doesn't want to commit to it. After making three minor league rehabilitation outings totaling eight innings last July 28, Sept. 3 and Sept. 9, he resumed throwing on flat ground about three weeks ago ahead of the Mets' spring training workouts, which start Feb. 22.

Outfielder Carlos Gomez and the Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a one-year deal worth $1,962,500, avoiding salary arbitration. ... The Cleveland Indians have signed free agent reliever Chris Ray to a minor league contract.

After a scandal-plagued year, NCAA President Mark Emmert told about 2,000 delegates at the annual NCAA convention in Indianapolis that it cannot happen again. Emmert used Thursday's state of the association speech to address some of the most tawdry allegations in the governing body's history. Emmert urged presidents and athletic department leaders to re-emphasize the importance of playing by the rules, getting an education and restoring integrity to college sports.

David Legwand scored his second goal of the game at 4:26 of overtime, and the Nashville Predators rallied from a two-goal first-period deficit in beating the visiting Colorado Avalanche, 3-2. ... Daniel Sedin scored a power-play goal 46 seconds into overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory over the host St. Louis Blues in a matchup for first place in the Western Conference. ... Dave Bolland had two goals, and rookie Jimmy Hayes and Viktor Stalberg scored 23 seconds apart in a three-goal second period as the host Chicago Blackhawks beat the Minnesota Wild, 5-2.

Craig Anderson made 34 saves for his first shutout of the season, Jason Spezza scored twice, and the visiting Ottawa Senators beat the surging New York Rangers, 3-0. ... Jordan Caron and Milan Lucic scored, and Tim Thomas stopped 33 shots to lead the Boston Bruins to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Montreal Canadiens. ... Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 33 shots, and the visiting Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Islanders for the 26th time in 28 games, 3-2.

Jiri Tlusty had two goals and an assist, Tuomo Ruutu added a goal and two assists and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the host Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-2. ... Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored in the shootout, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the visiting Phoenix Coyotes, 3-2, for their 13th straight home win. ... Logan Couture and Brad Winchester scored and Antti Niemi made 24 saves for his second shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was Couture's 18th goal of the season.

Danica Patrick and new crew chief Greg Zipadelli first met last week and found themselves working together for the first time Thursday at Daytona International Speedway. Patrick says Zipadelli has been patient and polite as she adapts to her first time in a Sprint Cup car. The former IndyCar star is officially in NASCAR full-time now. Zipadelli says he's enjoyed Patrick because she's drama-free and eager to learn everything she can about her new Stewart-Haas Racing car. ... Five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, coming off the worst season of his career, was without his crew chief when testing opened for the Daytona 500. Chad Knaus was on a Hendrick Motorsports-approved vacation to South Africa that most who know the tightly wound crew chief believe will help him over the course of NASCAR's grueling 11-month schedule. ... The widow of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon made a rare public appearance in accepting the BorgWarner Trophy he earned with last year's victory. Susie Wheldon accepted the BorgWarner Championship Drivers' Trophy on Wheldon's behalf in a ceremony in Detroit. Wheldon was killed in a 15-car accident in the opening laps of the Oct. 16 IndyCar season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

TENNIS

Defending champion Novak Djokovic could meet Andy Murray, his opponent in last year's Australian Open final, and Roger Federer could face Rafael Nadal in two marquee semifinals based on the draw that was held at Melbourne Park. Top-seeded Djokovic will play Paolo Lorenzi of Italy in the first round and No. 2 seed Nadal has drawn a qualifier. ... Defending champion Li Na reached the Sydney International final with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 over Petra Kvitova, ending the Czech's bid to become No. 1 before the Australian Open. Kvitova needed to win the Sydney International to replace Caroline Wozniacki atop the rankings when they're updated on Monday, and the Wimbledon champion was on track when she led by a set and a break. In men's quarterfinals, 2006 Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis beat top-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, 7-6 (7), 6-4.

Bernard Tomic moved into the final of the Kooyong exhibition tournament at Melbourne, Australia, with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2) win over Frenchman Gael Monfils. ... Belgian veteran Olivier Rochus beat Benoit Paire, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), ending the French qualifier's giant-killing run at the Heineken Open in Auckland, New Zealand. ... German qualifier Mona Barthel, 21, advanced to the final of the Hobart (Australia) International with a 6-0, 7-6 (6) win today over fourth-seeded compatriot Angelique Kerber. She will meet the winner of tonight's second semifinal between top-seeded Yanina Wickmayer and sixth-seeded Shahar Peer.

MISCELLANY

Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke remained in critical condition in a Salt Lake City hospital after a successful operation to repair a tear to an artery that caused bleeding in her brain. Doctors put her into a coma to relieve stress on her brain after her accident Tuesday, and she had surgery the next day. ... Frank Mirahmadi will begin his career as the new Oaklawn track announcer when the track opens on Friday. Mirahmadi replaces Terry Wallace, who announced his retirement after 37 years as the park's announcer in June. ... Police say a group of youths on motorcycles attacked an Olympiakos supporters' club in Athens, Greece, damaging the premises as well as 10 cars and 5 storefronts. No injuries have been reported. Attacks on soccer fan clubs are frequent in Greece, which has seen an increase in supporter violence in recent years.
