New St. Louis Skipper Joins Cards Caravan in Springfield MO - OzarksFirst.com

(Springfield, MO) -- The World Champion St. Louis Cardinals will start reporting to spring training camp in a little more than month.

Friday a few members of the team swung through Springfield on their annual caravan.

St. Louis pitchers Jason Motte and Mitchell Boggs, along with outfielder Shane Robinson, were joined by alumni Danny Cox and Jason Simontacchi.

They visited with Cards fans and signed autographs at Hammons Field.

Also joining the caravan was new Cardinals skipper Mike Matheny. He says he had no hesitation replacing future Hall of Famer Tony La Russa.

"In my opinion I was just offered maybe the greatest job on the planet," said new Cards skipper Mike Mathey. "At that point you don't say I can't do this. And it's not in my nature. What I saw was a great opportunity.  The people who make the decisions with the Cardinals organization know what they're doing. And know what they're looking for."

They also made a stop at the pediatric unit of Cox South to sign autographs, hand out gifts and boost the spirits of some sick children.

Seeing some of their favorite players helped patients feel a little better.

"This place can be kind of an overwhelming bad thing between the tests and whatever," says Kari Moser. "This is the first time he's smiled since we got here, so this is a good thing."
