The St. Louis Rams hold the 6th overall selection in the NFL Draft, which begins 10 days from today (see schedule here).
After originally holding the 2nd overall pick, the Rams have the opportunity to begin building a very talented, deep roster via the draft thanks to a blockbuster trade with the Washington Redskins.

Just in case you happened to be on the moon at the time, here are details of the trade that landed the Rams at #6 this year.
- St. Louis traded the #2 overall pick to the Washington Redskins in the 2012 NFL Draft
- The Redskins traded the Rams the #6 overall selection in this year’s draft plus the Redskins’ 2nd round selection in this year’s draft, first round pick in 2013, and first round pick in 2014 in exchange to move up 4 spots.
The St. Louis Rams will no doubt be locking down some major talent in the draft for the next several seasons, with their first opportunity coming April 26.
St. Louis seems to be an easy enough pick to figure out when factoring in the franchise’s needs in addition to the talent I believe will be available when they are on the clock.
If you have been following MSF’s TOP TEN countdown towards the NFL Draft, you know that I usually list several players of differing positions and give a strong reason each of them may be selected.
I’m going to change it up a little with the Rams though. I believe the Rams will pick one of two players.

Here are my two finalists for the Rams at #6:
Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma St & Michael Floyd WR Notre Dame
The Rams were plagued at receiver last season.
Danny Amendola dislocated his elbow in the season opener, Greg Salas broke his leg, and Mark Clayton played well for a few games before finishing the season on IR with a knee injury.
Plus, 3rd round pick Austin Pettis missed the last two games of the season due to violation of the league’s policy for performance enhancing drugs, and the Rams will be without the wideout the first two games of the 2012 season in continuation of the penalty.
The Rams brought in talented wideout Brandon Lloyd from the Broncos, but he won’t be back in 2012 after signing with the New England Patriots.
QB Sam Bradford was limited to 10 games due to injury, during which he only passed for 6 TDs and the Rams finished 32nd in scoring (that’s dead last), largely due to the 30th ranked passing offense.
It’s really very simple: the Rams need talent at WR and I believe two very talented receivers will be on the board when they pick.
They will either go with the strong, sure-handed Justin Blackmon (6-1, 215) who compiled a staggering 232 receptions, nearly 3,304 yards, and a mind-blowing 38 touchdowns the last two seasons, or they will take massive Notre Dame standout Michael Floyd, (6-3, 225) who hauled in over 100 balls himself a season ago.
Either would be a talented addition to the squad.
It is too early for Riley Rieff (another name being mentioned) to come off the board, and rumor is Jason Smith is cleared for OTAs. I’m not sure if this means he is getting another shot or the announcement is being made more for trade bait, but OL options will be abundant when they pick again twice in the 2nd round.
At #6 I see the Rams taking one of the two talented wideouts to add firepower to their offense and make life a little easier for Sam Bradford.
It is all a matter of personal opinion as to which wide-out it should be, however.
