Coming off of a disappointing series in Chicago, Atlanta put that behind them and swept the defending World Series champions at home in St. Louis. Some notable things from the series:
Jason Heyward had a couple of standout moments in the series. In game one, he homered into the left-field seats to give the Braves a 9-7 lead in the 12th inning. His homer ended up being the difference. In game three, Heyward battled against Lance Lynn in a ten-pitch plate appearance, ending it with a three-rbi double down the right field line. Overall, he went 3-15 with one home run, five RBI, and a walk.
Michael Bourn seemed to be on base the entire series. He went 8-17 with three RBI's, a walk, and also hit his first home run of the season.
Speaking of players who a great weekend at the plate, you have to mention Carlos Beltran. Beltran entered the series red-hot and that continued against the Braves. He hit a double, triple, and two home runs in game one of the series, then added another homer on Sunday.
After an up-and-down outing for Mike Minor on Friday, both Brandon Beachy and Tommy Hanson pitched well in their starts. Beachy battled some control issues to give up only two hits and one run in six innings while walking four and striking out six. Hanson looked shaky early Sunday, but recovered to strike out nine in five innings.
Livan Hernandez pitched the 10th and 11th innings on Friday, and managed to escape with the win after allowing four walks and two hits but no runs.
Allen Craig's mammoth home run on Sunday off of Cristhian Martinez is worth mentioning. Craig doesn't get a ton of pub, but he's a pretty nice player with some pop.
Tyler Pastornicky had a nice series, with four hits and the first stolen base of his career.
Finally, kudos to the Cardinals fans for the multiple standing ovations for Chipper Jones this weekend. Seeing that from opposing fan bases is awesome, and makes for some really great moments as we enjoy Chipper's last year in baseball.
