Lance Berkman injury update: St. Louis Cardinals GM says slugger has torn ... - SportingNews.com

Lance Berkman of the St. Louis Cardinals was diagnosed Monday with a meniscus tear in his left knee, but the team said the first baseman does not appear to have an ACL tear.

Berkman will be out at least six weeks, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told reporters before the Cardinals' game against the San Diego Padres at Busch Stadium. The timetable was set after an MRI exam in St. Louis. Mozeliak said Berkman will go to Colorado for a second opinion in the next few days.

"At a minimum, it's (arthroscopic surgery) to repair that, but it could be a larger injury, depending on what they find. We're hopeful and optimistic that that's what it is but we'll need a few days before we can determine anything else," Mozeliak said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Based on what (doctors) could see today, there was no ACL tear."

Berkman told reporters Sunday that the injury, which he suffered Saturday in Los Angeles, felt similar to the ACL tear he suffered in 2005. The 36-year-old slugger hinted that an ACL issue could put his career in jeopardy.
