The St. Louis Cardinals placed utility man Matt Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon with a strained oblique. To replace Carpenter on the roster, the Cardinals purchased the contract of Steven Hill from Triple A Memphis. The news was first tweeted by BJ Rains of Fox Sports Midwest.
Carpenter was in the lineup batting second last night and ripped a first-inning double; however, he injured himself on the swing and was removed from the game after the play. Despite playing primarily third base in the minors, Carpenter has seen the majority of his playing time come at first base for the Cardinals this season due to injuries. Carpenter has also played third base, left field, and right field this season. With a .288/.356/.519/.875 line, Carpenter's versatility will be missed.
Hill has played one big league game and that was in 2010. In it, he went 1-for-3 with a homer. The farmhand has been a player without a set position. In his first year as a pro, Hill played first base, catcher, and left field. Over the spant of his entire minor-league career, he has also seen playing time at third base and right field. Hill's career minor league hitting line is .287/.338/.516/.855. In 2012, with Memphis, he has hit .257/.303/.471/.774.
The Cardinals will use Hill to fill a bench spot until Jay or Craig is able to return from the disabled list. Jay was placed on the disabled list on May 15 and, if my math is correct, will be eligible to be activated on May 30. Craig was disabled on May 18 and will be eligible for activation on June 2.
