Chris Carpenter Returning to the St. Louis Cardinals Rotation on Friday - Rant Sports

Jerry Lai â€" US PRESSWIRE

Do you remember that guy who defeated Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies 1-o in the do or die Game 5 of the NLDS last season? You know, that guy who went 4-0 throughout the St. Louis Cardinals world championship run? Well, that guy is Chris Carpenter, and he’s returning on Friday after he was supposed to be out for the season with a nerve issue in his arm.

To say this is a shot in the arm for St. Louis would be an understatement. Although they just won a huge series against the Los Angeles Dodgers to maintain a slim lead for that second wild card spot, they are still in a bit of  free fall. Luckily for the Cardinals, a majority of National League teams have struggled as well, even though one term in particular â€" the Milwaukee Brewers â€" have made a late charge.

Carpenter â€" who threw a 95-pitch simulated game on Saturday â€" says he is very much looking forward to return with his club.

“I’m looking forward to it. We’ve worked hard to get back and be able to do this. Like we’ve said all along, we weren’t expecting it, but I’m excited. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to getting back out there and competing.”

The Cardinals play the hapless Chicago Cubs on Friday, so it will be nice for Carpenter to go against a struggling team. Judging by how many games are left in the season, Carpenter should get three starts in the regular season. Hopefully for Carpenter and the Cardinals, those three starts are extended due to postseason play.
