NFC West power rankings: St. Louis Rams need time to improve - Ramblin' Fan (blog)

You could argue that the NFC West had the best weekend in the NFL, as each squad was able to pull out a win in an impressive fashion. However, you could also argue that none of the four teams in the division are anywhere close to where each team need to be, assuming winning a Super Bowl is the main goal in mind. Let’s take a closer look in this week’s Ramblin’ Fan NFC West power rankings…

1. San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers did not look that impressive against the Detroit Lions Sunday night on NBC. The team committed several mistakes on offense, defense and special teams. The defense did a great job containing Detroit Lions’ wide receiver Calvin Johnson to the best of its abilities, but other players, like running back Joique Bell, were able to break lose for large gains. If the San Francisco 49ers want to be anointed the best team in the NFL, the team needs to demolish playoff caliber squads like the Detroit Lions.

2. Seattle Seahawks

Beast Mode. Beast Mode. Beast Mode. The Seahawks are not going to win the Super Bowl this year, but, good lord, is that team fun to watch. The Seahawks have a stellar defense and tremendous run game; however, the team needs to nail its passing game before it can hoist a Tiffany trophy at the end of the season. If this running game is still intact in, say, two or three years, this team could definitely contend for a championship.

3. St. Louis Rams

Stand back from the situation, and the St. Louis Rams win over the Washington Redskins was really not that impressive. The Redskins are a middling team that is going to finish in the bottom ten of the league. That isn’t necessarily something to be upset about, if you’re a Rams fan, because this current Rams team is about two free agency and draft classes away from being able to compete for the division title. If the Rams were anywhere close to being like the 49ers or Seahawks, Washington would have been put away fairly easily.

4. Arizona Cardinals

Blind squirrel, meet nut. Nut, meet blind squirrel. If the Arizona Cardinals vs. New England Patriots games was to be replayed 99 more times, the Patriots would have won all the rematches. The Cardinals are one of those basement teams in the NFL, and there are several improvements that need to take place before the team can even win four or five games. Not to mention head coach Ken Wisenhunt is probably going to be out the door after this year. We’ll see…
