The St. Louis Rams did draft two new members for their wide receiving corps in April with second rounder Brian Quick and fourth round pick Chris Givens, but the team had another shot to land a potential playmaker on Thursday. Former Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon was selected in the second round of the NFL supplemental draft by the Cleveland Browns. According to the rules of the draft process, the Browns will now forfeit a second round pick in 2013 for making that choice on Thursday.

While the Rams have to like their current assembly of wide receivers having picked both Austin Pettis in round three and Greg Salas in the fourth round a year ago, adding one more player into the mix could have been a dream move. Quick is a bodied target, but he is really the most size at the wideout spot that the Rams have at 6’4” 220lbs.

Gordon is a rangy receiver at 6’3” 224lbs. and ran a 4.52 in the 40 yard dash during his pre-draft workouts. He was dismissed from the Baylor team in 2011 following a positive marijuana test and was forced to sit out last year after transferring to Utah per NCAA rules. After some financial turmoil he decided to enter the rarely used supplemental draft rather than wait out the process for the regular draft next spring.

It would have been a nice addition to stick Gordon in amongst the Rams’ wideouts and let them all compete during the offseason and make one another better. Using a second round pick is a bit lofty for a player who hasn’t suited up in more than a year, but the Rams have plenty of draft ammo to work with following the pre-draft deal with the Washington Redskins in March.

If Gordon turns out to be the next best thing, the Rams will surely be kicking themselves for not getting into the bidding. Still, Head Coach Jeff Fisher likes his current assembly of receivers just as much as quarterback Sam Bradford so they need a chance to prove themselves on the field before saying that the Rams should have made the move to land Gordon.
