ST. CHARLES • A O'Fallon, Mo., man admitted his role this morning in the murder of a St. Charles County man during a drug deal that turned into a robbery on the Bass Pro Shop parking lot in St. Charles.
Cory Jermaine Brooks, 22, of the 200 block of Centerfield Drive, pleaded guilty in St. Charles County Circuit Court to second-degree murder and conspiracy to distribute drugs. He pleaded no contest to the charge of armed criminal action.
Prosecutors recommended that he get 30 years in prison when he is sentenced on March 12. Brooks' plea on the armed criminal action charge means he admitted no guilt but agreed prosecutors had sufficient evidence to win a conviction.
Brandon Joyce, 26, was killed during the incident on Christmas Eve 2010.
Brooks said that he and Jevone Little, 21, agreed to sell Joyce cocaine and got inside Joyce's pickup truck. They then drove to the Ameristar Casino to pick up another man who agreed to chip in $100 to buy the cocaine. They then drove together to an ATM where Joyce withdrew $100 to buy the cocaine.
Then they went to the Bass Pro parking lot, claiming to await the arrival of their supplier, Brooks said. He said that Joyce asked them where his cocaine was, and he got into a struggle with Little.
"They started wrestling and I heard two shots," Brooks said on the stand. "Then I ran."
Little and Brooks were picked up in a getaway car by Brooks' twin, Tory Tremaine Brooks, and Deveon Cartez Shockley.
Shockley, 21, of the 6100 block of Jackson Avenue in St. Louis County, Tory Brooks, 22, of the 900 block of North Sixth Street in St. Charles, and Little, of the 3300 block of McKibbon Road in St. John, all face murder and other felony charges. Their cases are pending.
Joyce was shot in the head, and he died four days later. He was a graduate of Duchesne High in St. Charles and had a brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings football team. The year he died, he was on the Rams' offseason roster.
