St. Louis Cardinals’ principal owner Bill DeWitt Jr. speaks about Albert Pujols' deal â€" MLB News

Even though Albert Pujols is long gone to the Los Angeles Angels after over a $250 million deal, the St. Louis Cardinals’ principal owner Bill DeWitt Jr. finds it insupportable to assert that the club did not try to retain the player.

Talking to the journalists, DeWitt, what surprises many, for the first time brought to fore what had previously remained unknown even to the most curiously investigative journalist. DeWitt revealed that, along the general manager of the team John Mozeliak, had spoken to Albert Pujols and his wife to find a way to keep him in the team.

That did not materialise. However, if DeWitt was to speak about another matter, it was the substantial sum that was involved in retaining the player. That is where the differences might have occurred; something that could not be averted.

"I think [Cardinals fans] realize that you can only do so much for a given player and compete year in and year out," he said. "It's not, is he worth X, or X times two? It's how much can I afford to pay one player and put together a team that's going to be competitive?”

He touched upon, what can at best be called, some potentially controversial subjects as well. He referred to what, which he thought was no longer, to be not tagged as secret: That FOX played a role in getting the player signed with the Los Angeles Angels.

“That's the whole jigsaw puzzle that all teams have. Some teams have more capacity. I don't think there's any secret, [the Angels] at their own press conference thanked FOX for their new [television rights package]. That certainly had a hand in it."

Although the St. Louis Cardinals failed to have their player, a quality slugger in the team, it can be argued that the club wants to keep that behind them now and look forward. The current Major League Champs indeed have to strategise from now onwards to not only retain their dominance on the game, but also to avoid any embarrassing failure to be not able to defend the title for themselves.
