Adam Wainwright brought his A-Game Tuesday night as the St. Louis Cardinals shut out the San Diego Padres 4-0.
Now up two games to none in the series, the Cardinals turn to their best pitcher, Lance Lynn, who is still in contention to be the major's first seven-game winner.
The sophomore pitcher, who is also a local boy both geographically and at the collegiate level, has been the Cards' most reliable starter all season long.
On the season, Lynn has pitched 50.2 innings, has 49 strikeouts and has allowed 16 walks. He is 6-1 with a 2.31 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.
A series sweep against the offensively challenged Padres would go a long way. Cincinnati continued its march toward toward the NL Central crown last night, keeping pace with the Cardinals.
After beating the NL's best (Atlanta Braves), the Reds are only half a game behind St. Louis.
With two hits and two RBI, Carlos Beltran remains the Cardinals' main source of power and production.
Pitching against the Cardinals tonight will be a familiar face in former Cardinal Jeff Suppan.
The 37-year-old righty has had himself a decent enough season up to this point, going 2-2 with an ERA right at 3.00 and a 1.38 WHIP. Not bad considering the Padres are among the worst in the league at providing run support for their starters.
