The St. Louis Blues will head into next season with new ownership. President John Davidson may choose not to return in 2012-13.
May 25, 2012 - The St. Louis Blues entered the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs as the odds-on favorites to win the Western Conference title and try for their first-ever hoisting of the ultimate prize in hockey. Things didn't work out quite so well for the team, as the regular-season powerhouse was swept out of the playoffs in the second round by the No. 8 seed Los Angeles Kings. The team will begin next season with new ownership and may have a different look from the top down.
Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Blues President John Davidson may choose to leave the team during the offseason. Davidson is in the first year of a four-year contract, but has a window to seek employment elsewhere due to ownership changing hands to a new group led by Tom Stillman.
Davidson stressed that his preference is to stay put - "We thoroughly enjoy St. Louis; it's been great to us," he said - but with the uncertainty of Stillman's plans and the window closing at a time that Davidson chose not to disclose, he may soon be checking his options.
"As of right now, Tom, who I have a lot of respect for, is deciding in his own mind how he wants to have the organization set up," Davidson said. "He bought a hockey club and he runs the business. We don't know what he's going to do. He might keep everything exactly the same. He might not keep everything exactly the same. I have no idea what he's trying to do. But that's his right because this is a major undertaking. He's trying to change the fortunes financially of this organization.
"It's Tom's team. He is a respectful person, there's no question. We talk a lot. We'll get it figured out. With the window, I have the right to do what I want to do. So we'll figure it out. It's a problem, but it's a good problem."
The Blues certainly want to build on the success they experienced in 2011-12 ... but the man at the forefront of getting them there may not be around for the next phase.
