Call them the Arizona Cardinals -- or, since that's taken, the St. Louis Wildcats.
The St. Louis Cardinals drafted UA shortstop Alex Mejia with their 4th round (No. 150 overall) pick. Two rounds later, the club selected Wildcats ace Kurt Heyer.
Mejia and Heyer were two of five Wildcats taken so far in Tuesday's amateur draft, which includes rounds 2-15. Rounds 16-40 will be held Wednesday.
The New York Yankees selected infielder/outfielder Robert Refsnyder with their fifth-round (187th overall) pick.
Former Cienega standout Seth Mejias-Brean was selected in the eighth round (No. 262) by the Cincinnati Reds. Outfielder Joey Rickard went in the ninth round (No. 302) to Tampa Bay.
Mejia, a junior from Sylmar, Calif., has had a banner stretch recently. On May 30, he was named the Pac-12 Player and Defensive Player of the Year. One day later, he was named a first-team All-American by Louisville Slugger and he recently helped the Wildcats earn a regional championship.
Mejia hit .367 this season with three home runs and 51 RBIs. He's also known as a plus defender in the field.
Refsnyder was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection and hit .353 with a team-high 61 RBIs for coach Andy Lopez's squad.
The Wildcats' Friday's night starter and default ace the last three seasons, Heyer -- a junior from Huntington Beach, Calif. -- is enjoying a career year. He's 12-2 with a 2.03 ERA.
Mejias-Brean hit .363 and leads the Wildcats with 20 doubles. He's second on the team with 56 RBIs.
Rickard, a junior from Las Vegas, has a .326 average and has started all 54 games he's appeared in.
The Wildcats are preparing to host St. John's this weekend in a super regional matchup at Hi Corbett Field. The opening game is set for Friday at noon.
