NFL: Chris Long, St. Louis Rams agree to four-year contract extension - San Jose Mercury News

The St. Louis Rams signaled their commitment to building a winner right before the start of training camp, agreeing to terms with defensive end Chris Long on a four-year contract extension through the 2016 season.

Getting the deal done before training camp was a priority for Long.

"It's huge for me," Long said after a two-hour workout ended early Sunday night. "You like to know where you stand, and I feel really good about obviously their commitment to me."

Long, 27, was seventh in the NFL with 13 sacks last year. He had been entering the final year of a six-year, $56.5 million contract he signed after the Rams drafted him No. 2 overall in 2008 out of Virginia. Long's father is former Raiders star Howie Long.

Texans: Houston Pro Bowl receiver Andre Johnson says he'll miss "a week or so" after a minor groin injury in the team's second morning practice. He missed nine regular-season games last season with hamstring injuries.

Johnson fell awkwardly running a route Sunday morning and had an MRI exam later in the day that showed a "mild strain."

"It just tightened up on me," Johnson said. "I had hit the ground pretty hard, stretching out for a ball. That was pretty much it."

Dolphins: Coach Joe Philbin confirmed former Pro Bowl wide receiver Braylon Edwards had a workout with Miami last week. Edwards, 29, had 15 catches for 181 yards in nine games for the

49ers last season, missing time with knee and shoulder injuries. The 49ers released him the final week.

Giants: New York wide receiver Hakeem Nicks said he remains on schedule to return to practice sometime in mid-August and has suffered no setbacks with his surgically repaired right toe.

Lions: Forget that two-game suspension last year for his Thanksgiving stomp. Even when he was able to play, Detroit defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh wasn't too thrilled with his performance.

"I didn't like my approach, now that I look back on that particular season -- especially compared to my rookie season," Suh said. "There's really some foundational things in my game I need to focus on."

Suh was a sensation as a rookie in 2010, finishing the season with 10 sacks. Last year, he had only four sacks and made as much news for his style of play as for his production.

Jets: New York All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis was held out of team drills with tightness in his right hamstring.

"I have had a lot of hamstring problems, so this is just something where we're just trying to take care of it before it even occurs," the Revis said. "It's just a little tightness."

Bills: Buffalo coach Chan Gailey expects wide receiver David Nelson to miss between four and five days with a strained tendon in his right leg.

Bengals: Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis has banned players from tweeting during training camp after consulting team leaders about his proposed crackdown.
