The St. Louis Rams drafted two new weapons at wide receiver for quarterback Sam Bradford this offseason (Brian Quick and Chris Givens) and two last year as well (Austin Pettis and Greg Salas), but the club should consider making a bigger splash and trade for disgruntled Pittsburgh Steelersâ wideout Mike Wallace.
While no team was willing to pony up the draft choices necessary to sign him a restricted free agent tender offer, that doesnât mean that the Steelers wouldnât consider a sign and trade deal. The club signed one of their other premier weapons in Antonio Brown to a five-year contract on Friday which many believe was a slap in the face to Wallace.
Wallace and the Steelers have been at odds since the unhappy pass catcher refused to sign his tender earlier in the offseason. The club has been reluctant to make a long-term deal with him because they feel that he may be a one-dimensional receiver as a deep threat and a product of their passing system. His monetary demands have been on par with players like Vincent Jackson who signed a monstrous deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency while his production has yet to live up to those levels.
For the Rams, landing Wallace would be huge as Bradford did well with a speedy Brandon Lloyd last year, but he left for the New England Patriots in the offseason. The deal also makes plenty of sense with the Rams having such a stockpile of draft picks courtesy of trade with the Washington Redskins for Robert Griffin III in Aprilâs NFL Draft. Using some of those choices to land a top-tier deep threat would be a wise move for Rams brass.
The Wallace situation only looks to get messier for the Steelers as he threatens a lengthy holdout of camp. It may be wise for both parties to move on with Pittsburgh receiving some compensation and Wallace getting that fat paycheck that heâs been looking for all offseason. The Rams need to make a move and see if the Steelers are seriously interested in shopping their upset receiver.
