“He physically can do everything that’s required of a corner, an elite corner for that matter, with the footwork and the change of direction, tackling and ball skills he has. He understands the defense. He’s going to be a very good corner in this league.†That is what St. Louis Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher said of his rookie cornerback Janoris Jenkins when asked about his potential.
Comments like these go a long way in distancing the Rams from the troubled player kicked off of the Florida football team with four children and turning Jenkins into a potential shutdown NFL corner. Jenkins had his own evaluation of how he tries to play his position saying: “I play like a ninja, an assassin. I love to be around the ball. I’m quick and physical. I just play the position with a chip on my shoulder.â€
His coach seems to think that Jenkins is more than strictly a physical talent as well. Fisher lauded his effort in film study and really believes that much of his success is due to knowledge. Fisher said: “He’s a very, very willing pupil. Jenkins is very instinctual. He’s made a lot of plays on the ball, and just I think purely on instincts. He just seems to have a knack for being around the football.â€
Those types of comments are exactly what teams like to hear about a young cornerback just entering the league. The more a player can be around the ball and have a second nature for being near the pigskin, the better the chance is of him forcing an incompletion or intercepting a pass.
Getting beyond those off-field concerns that linger with Jenkins is a must if he is going to enjoy success in the NFL. He has the right attitude however, as the corner said: “Football is very important to me. This is a dream come true for me.†As long as he continues to abide by those words and truly appreciate the opportunity that he has with the Rams to be a special player, Jenkins will realize his potential and will make an immediate impact in the league.
