When the St. Louis Rams signed Vernon Gholston Wednesday, the league-wide reaction seemed to be surprise that Vernon Gholston was not playing somewhere in Europe. That's never the kind of reaction you'd want to grace a free agency move, but Turf Show Times has a pretty good explanation for the bizarre moveâ"one that leaves the Rams looking pretty good and Gholston looking on borrowed time.
TST's conclusion: The Rams needed someone who could pass a physical right away and play Saturday, against the Dallas Cowboys, when the starters came out. Most of the players on the scrap heap who could come in and play defensive end are physical question marks; Gholston's just been healthy and terrible, which put him at an advantage over guys like Andre Carter.
It's probably not the most reassuring thing for Gholston to hear as he looks for his first career sackâ"this is a guy who was drafted three picks after Chris Longâ"but I guess being on an NFL roster for a week or two is better than not being on an NFL roster for a week or two.
