St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Tyler Greene belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to propel the Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres in the opener of a three-game series on Monday from Busch Stadium.
A two-run double from Jesus Guzman in the top of the eighth gave the Padres a one-run edge, but St. Louis battled back in the bottom half as Yadier Molina singled with one out and Greene launched the first pitch he saw from reliever Andrew Cashner (2-3) over the wall in center.
Jason Motte (3-1), who surrendered the double to Guzman, then retired the Padres in order in the ninth to record the victory.
Greene finished with three hits while Rafael Furcal and Matt Carpenter each knocked in a run for the Cardinals, who snapped a four-game skid.
San Diego starter Clayton Richard tossed 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball before handing the ball to Cashner with one out in the eighth. The Padres had won two straight.
