The Cardinals and the Padres meet for game two of their series in St. Louis
The St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres meet on Tuesday for game two of their series at Bisch Stadium.
The St. Louis Cardinals managed to rally late on Monday to get the win as they cling to their shrinking lead in the N.L. Central. Tyler Greene hit a two out two run home run in the bottom of the right inning that was the difference maker, Yadier Molina had two hits, and Matt Holliday had a hit as the Cardinals had nine hits and scored four runs. On the mound Jaime Garcia allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out seven over seven innings to not factor in the decision as it was Jason Motte who blew the save but got the win after working 1.1 innings. For Tuesdayâs game St. Louis starts Adam Wainwright who has been touched up this season but appears to be improving. For the season Wainwright has allowed 51 hits and 28 earned runs while striking out 40 over 43.2 innings of work for a 5.77 ERA.
The San Diego Padres just donât seem to have enough good players to compete night after night and they showed once again Monday just how close they are. Yonder Alonso and Jesus Guzman each had two hits while Chase Headley and Cameron Maybin each had a hit as the Padres scored three runs on eight hits. On the mound Clayton Richard allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out three over 7.1 innings to not factor in the decision as it was Andrew Cashner who blew the save and took the loss. For Tuesdayâs game San Diego start Edinson Volquez who looks to have finally turned his potential into reality. For the season Volquez has allowed 43 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 49 over 53.1 innings of work for a 3.04 ERA.
St. Louis is 2-5 in their last seven games as a home favorite, 1-4 in their last five games against the N.L. West, and 2-6 in Wainwrightâs last eight starts. San Diego is 16-38 in their last 54 against a team with a winning record, 6-24 in their last 30 as a road underdog, and 4-1 in Volquezâs last five starts. San Diego is 11-36 in their last 47 games in St. Louis.
As far as I am concerned the Cardinals look like they are looking for a place to fall down and with Wainwright still on the mend and Volquez overpowering look for the Padres to get a win here.
