St. Louis Rams: Could Chris Givens Be the Best Rookie WR on the Rams? - Bleacher Report

Speed kills.

That is the phrase you thrown around in sports, and it's so true. In just about any sport, speed is a valuable commodity to have. For the St. Louis Rams, they drafted Chris Givens in the fourth-round of the NFL draft for several reasons, but above all else, the Rams drafted Chris Givens because he is really, really fast.

Givens ran a 4.37 in the 40 yard dash. That put him on the Rams' radar, as they don't have a receiver on the roster that is a true "burner." However, it would be a mistake to label Givens as a pure speed guy that is just going to go deep on every play. Givens is a very good route runner, and is able to line up all over the field.

I've gone on the record to say that I think the other rookie receiver on the Rams' roster, Brian Quick, is going to be a good player. I think Quick could be a star!

Having said that, maybe Givens, because of his versatility, will be the better receiver as a rookie.

So far, Givens' speed is obvious to the guy throwing him the football, Rams' QB Sam Bradford.

"Givens, first of all, is really fast." Bradford said. "He's a guy that defenses are going to have to be extremely aware of. If they fall asleep on him for a half-second, he's going to be by them. That's nice to have, that added speed.”

Who will be the best wide receiver for the Rams in 2012?

Who will be the best wide receiver for the Rams in 2012?

  • Steve Smith

  • Danny Amendola

  • Brian Quick

  • Chris Givens

  • Greg Salas

  • Danario Alexander

  • Somebody Else

Givens, a young man that doesn't seem shy about his talent, agreed with Bradford's assessment.

“Speed is definitely a big part of my game,” he said. “It's something I pride myself on.”

I think the Rams' primary receivers this season will be Steve Smith, Brian Quick, and Danny Amendola. However, because of his versatility and big play ability, expect Chris Givens to also make a big impact as a rookie.

Brian Quick is going to be a star, but coming from a small school, it might take him a season to adjust to the NFL. It wouldn't shock me if he actually put up better numbers than Quick as a rookie.

As always, thanks for reading.
