The New York Mets and the St. Louis Cardinals meet on Saturday for game two of their series at Citi Field.
It was a historical night for the New York Mets on Friday as Johan Santana broke the Metsâ string of 51 years without a no hitter as he no hit the Cardinals on 134 pitches. Santana threw 77 strikes, walked five and struck out eight in a game the Mets needed and a game the Mets fans and organization needed as well. Lucas Duda hit a three run home run, David Murphy had two hits and drove in three runs, and Kirk Niewenhuis had two hits and scored three times as the Mets scored eight runs on eight hits. On Saturday New York starts R.A. Dickey who has won his last five decisions. For the year Dickey has allowed 54 hits and 22 earned runs while striking out 61 over 64.2 innings of work for a 3.06 ERA.
The St. Louis Cardinals have scored more runs than any team in baseball this year but they had no answers for the Mets and Santana on Friday. Tyler Greene struck out twice, David Freese struck out to end the game, and Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday were also strikeout victims as only five Cardinals reached base and those were all on walks. On the mound Adam Wainwright allowed six hits and seven runs while striking out six over 6.1 innings of work for his fourth loss of the year. For Saturdayâs game St. Louis starts Lance Lynn who has lost just once all year. For the season Lynn has allowed 48 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 60 over 63.2 innings of work for a 2.54 ERA.
New York is 7-0 in their last seven games against a right handed starter, 8-15 in their last 23 games against the N.L. Central, and 6-0 in Dickeyâs last six home starts. St. Louis is 2-6 in their last eight games overall, 1-7 in their last eight road games, and 9-2 in Lynnâs last 11 starts. St. Louis is 2-6 in their last eight games in New York.
The total in this one is set at seven and I look for it to stay under that number. My stronger play is on who will win and I will post that in the Premium Area.
