Call them the Arizona Cardinals â€" or, since that’s taken, the St. Louis Wildcats.

The St. Louis Cardinals drafted UA shortstop Alex Mejia with their 4th round (No. 150 overall) pick. Two rounds later, the club selected Wildcats ace Kurt Heyer.

Mejia and Heyer were two of three Wildcats taken so far in today’s amateur draft, which includes rounds 2-15. Rounds 16-40 will be held Wednesday.

The New York Yankees selected infielder/outfielder Robert Refsnyder with their fifth-round (187th overall) pick.

Mejia, a junior from Sylmar, Calif., has had a banner stretch recently. On May 30, he was named the Pac-12 Player and Defensive Player of the Year. One day later, he was named a first-team All-American by Louisville Slugger and he recently helped the Wildcats earn a regional championship.

Mejia hit .367 this season with three home runs and 51 RBIs. He’s also known as a plus defender in the field.

Refsnyder was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection and hit .353 with a team-high 61 RBIs for coach Andy Lopez’s squad.

The Wildcats’ Friday’s night starter and default ace the last three seasons, Heyer â€" a junior from Huntington Beach, Calif. â€" is enjoying a career year. He’s 12-2 with a 2.03 ERA.

The Wildcats are preparing to host St. John’s this weekend in a super regional matchup at Hi Corbett Field. The opening game is set for Friday at noon.
