Matt Carpenter to play at second base – MLB News - bettor.com (blog)

St. Louis Cardinals' Matt Carpenter to play at second base â€" MLB News

The St. Louis Cardinals have decided to play Matt Carpenter at second base. This news comes as a great surprise and with an element of excitement for the latter. On Thursday, July 5, the player said he was excited and all ready to play.

At a time when the Cardinals are supplied with some of the best hitters and baseman, his promotion to second base is an extraordinarily delightful news for the young player. Keeping in mind the presence of Matt Holliday, Allen Craig and Carlos Beltran in different positions, Carpenter will have enormous challenges to surmount.

"I'm excited. I'm just ready to play," Carpenter said. "Any time I come to the park and see my name in the lineup, it fires me up. I don't really care where it is. I just want to give it my best."

The team manager is satisfied with the kind of performance the young player has shown so far. While he might have dreamt of playing at first base, Carpenter, on the other hand, is content and excited with what has come his way.

"Obviously, it's not first base, but it's the same side of the infield. For me, a ground ball's a ground ball," Carpenter said. "It's just one of those things where you're going to go out there and make the most of it, try to get it done when you get those opportunities."

Not that Carpenter has not played at first or third base. He has been tried everywhere and he has not disappointed the team. In his 40 appearances, Carpenter has maintained a batting average of .289 with 21 RBIs to his credit.

Since he has played in different positions, the newly assigned second base will not pose much of a challenge for the talented player. Nonetheless, having remained in professional circuit, he is aware of what the circumstances demand: energy, zeal and tirelessness.

That is where the young player, Carpenter as a second baseman, will be tested in upcoming days when the Cardinals will get on the rival teams as the defending World Series Champions of 2011.
